WORK
WWOOFing is NOT "Free housing" or a "Cheap vacation". WWOOFers trade their labor for their housing and meals. Sometimes the work is physically demanding, sometimes boring and repetitive. WWOOFers need to put in their 25 hours per week even if the weather is "Too hot to work." WWOOFers that are not accustomed to using tools often have blisters at the end of their first day. WWOOFers that arrive skinny or chubby depart fit and muscular. Are you up for it?

If you are traveling by public transit you can reach Willits by Mendocino Transit Authority, Greyhound, or Amtrak bus and We can pick you up at the station.
If you are traveling by bicycle, the only road between the land and town, HWY 101 is both steep and has a narrow shoulder. Only hard-core bikers are up to the 15 mile ride.

Poison Oak
Consider your poison oak sensitivity before choosing to visit Living Hills. Poison oak grows thickly here and it is difficult to avoid completely. Poison oak is a native plant that causes dermatitis, or an itchy rash. Individual sensitivity to the plant varies and while some people have no reaction, others suffer severe rashes. Behavior can have a great effect on the level of dermatitis one experiences. Vigilance in washing and consciousness of the plant can make a stay here possible for those with sensitivity, yet some reaction is likely.
Kill Traps
Rodent pests such as gophers, mice, and voles cause significant damage to crops in the garden and their droppings are a health hazard in the house. We use traps to kill the rodents. If you choose to come to Living Hills, you are likely to see dead rodents in the traps, but you will not need to set or clean the traps. Some volunteers in the past found this practice very disturbing. Before applying consider if this practice will be overly distressing for you.
Wildlife
Wildlife in the area includes: mountain lion, black bear, turkey, deer, bobcat, fox, banana slug, skunk, mosquito, tick and rattlesnake. We would like to call the ants and mice wildlife, but they always want to join us in the kitchen. . The deer would like to call our garden dinner, we call those deer venison.
